1. Hatch Cover Rolling Stoppers
On cargo ships, hatch covers roll open and closed on wheels along the hatch coaming (the raised frame around the hatch). When the sea gets rough, the ship rolls and pitches, creating massive dynamic forces.

The Purpose: Rolling stoppers are heavy-duty, reinforced steel blocks or chocks welded to the hatch coaming and the side plates of the panels.

How They Work: When the hatch cover is fully closed and battened down, these stoppers absorb and transfer the extreme horizontal and athwartship (side-to-side) forces directly into the ship’s hull structure. This prevents the closed panels from shifting, shifting out of alignment, or damaging the rubber water-tight packings.

2. Roller Chain Stoppers (Anchoring Systems)
TTS also famously manufactures Roller Chain Stoppers used on a ship’s deck near the windlass.

The Purpose: When a ship is at anchor, you do not want the massive pull of the anchor chain resting directly on the winch/windlass motor and gears, as this would destroy them.

How They Work: The chain passes through a roller, and a heavy mechanical bar or jaw (the stopper) drops down onto a link. The stopper locks the chain in place, transferring all the tension of the anchoring vessel directly to the deck foundation.
